News for USATF Mid-Atlantic Officials

Officials Clinic at 2015 Penn Relays

The annual Officials Clinic at the Penn Relays on April 21-22 is an excellent way to get started in the world of track and field officiating. The clinic includes both classroom instruction and hands-on outside activities. You will be able to complete your certification as a USATF official at the clinic. To enroll in the clinic, you must be a member of USATF and apply for certification as an Apprentice-level official by April 9. Read more.

Are You Ready To Step Up? Upgrade Applications Posted

USATF Mid-Atlantic officials who wish to seek an upgrade in their level of certification may now submit applications. The application form includes a list of the requirements under the new four-level certification system. A separate form should be used by officials who recommend upgrades. Additional information is posted on the Officials Certification page.

Remember To Renew Your Membership by March 31

If you have been recertified for the 2013-2016 Olympiad, your certification is good until the 2016 Olympics. But you must still obtain a current membership by March 31 each year or be considered suspended, not eligible for the additional insurance or eligible for selection to national championships. For information including the difference between membership vs. certification, please visit the Officials Certification page.

Another Reminder: Keep Your Email Address Current

Please remember to notify Earl Edwards, officials chair, at ebiggeazzy@aol.com if your email address changes, so that you receive notices about officials.

USATF and NCAA Rule Books Available

The 2015 USATF rulebook and the 2015-2016 NCAA rulebook are now available as PDF's on the USATF Officiating Resources page. Here are links to the latest versions of the four major rule books:

Clinic Information and Training Materials

Resources on clinics and training materials are available at the USATF national officials website under the "Resources" section. The training materials include clinic notes and PowerPoint slide shows; the Equipment and Facilities Newsletter; various forms, manuals and handbooks; and a series of monographs on various topics. Some of the files are large and may take some time to download.

Mid-Atlantic Officials Shirts Available

The Mid-Atlantic Officials Committee announces that the officials shirt debuted at their annual meeting is now available for purchase. Thanks to the efforts of the committee’s vice chair, Earl Edwards, the shirts are reasonably priced and well embroidered. The shirts are not required but will give you something distinctive to wear when a meet does not require the national shirt or meet-specific clothing. Order form.

A Message From the New Officials Chair

Hello to all,

As the new chair of the Mid-Atlantic Association Officials Committee, it is my duty but most of all my pleasure to announce our newly elected officers of the Officials Committee.

To the office of secretary will be duly elected Frank Palombaro. While Frank is a mainstay from years of due diligent work on the committee, he has now taken on the task as committee secretary. Good luck to Frank in his service!

New to the office of vice chair is duly elected Maria Baptiste. While new to the committee and office (but not new to track and field), Maria brings a new perspective and energy to the position.

To the office of chair is duly elected Earl Edwards. This will be my second term as a committee member. My former office on the committee was vice chair. As chair, it will be my task to uphold the wonderful example that I've received from the former chair, my friend and mentor Ken Yerger.

The committee will start off running with the Penn Relays officials clinic, continuing with recertification of officials for the new Olympiad and USATF membership renewal. Those items will be the preeminent tasks on the Officials Committee's agenda.

Earl Edwards
